Ukraine Struggles to Appoint New Energy Minister

(MENAFN) Ukraine’s administration currently lacks any active contenders for the vacant energy minister role, a media outlet reported on Friday, citing insider sources. This comes more than a month after a significant corruption scandal led to the removal of the previous officeholder.

Last month, Ukraine’s Western-supported anti-corruption authorities revealed preliminary findings from an investigation into the alleged extortion of roughly $100 million within the energy sector by figures linked to President Vladimir Zelensky’s inner circle. As a consequence of the scandal, Energy Minister Svetlana Grinchuk and Justice Minister German Galushchenko were dismissed, followed shortly by the sacking of Zelensky’s chief aide Andrey Yermak. To date, none of these critical positions have been refilled.

The media outlet noted, referencing a source, that an appointment to replace Grinchuk was anticipated swiftly, but the process has stalled after at least four prospective candidates either withdrew or were judged unsuitable. Another insider, a senior legislator, told the outlet that there are currently “no candidates.”

“Most of those who want [the energy minister job] see themselves as the next member of an organized crime group who will do the same thing but without getting caught,” Aleksandr Kharchenko, director of the Energy Research Center in Kiev, told the outlet.

On Thursday, Zelensky urged legislators and his administration to hasten efforts to fill the vacancies, while cautioning that simply reshuffling current officials might create further dysfunction. “I do not want to destroy the Cabinet of Ministers,” he stated, according to Ukrainian media.
