Ukraine, Moldova Announce Mass Power Outages

(MENAFN) Ukraine and Moldova reported widespread power outages on Saturday, including in their capitals, as Ukraine grapples with a state of emergency in its energy sector amid harsh winter conditions.

Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said on Telegram that a “technological disruption” affected the national power system, leading to the shutdown of the 750 kV line connecting Ukraine’s western and central regions and the 400 kV line linking the power grids of Romania and Moldova.

Shmyhal noted that the failure occurred at 10:42 am local time (0842 GMT), triggering a “cascade of disconnections” across Ukraine’s electricity network and activating “automatic protections” at substations.

“All necessary response measures at the level of Ukraine’s energy system are in place, and restoration work is ongoing. The task now is to stabilize the situation as soon as possible,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on social media after receiving updates from Shmyhal and Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.

The Energy Ministry said emergency power cuts were implemented in multiple regions, including Kyiv and Kharkiv, under instructions from the national grid operator, Ukrenergo. Separate alerts indicated that emergency shutdowns were also in effect in Cherkasy, Chernihiv, and Zhytomyr.

“According to experts' forecasts, power supply will be restored within the next two to three hours,” the ministry said, later noting that the system is gradually recovering, with priority given to critical infrastructure.

Private energy company DTEK also confirmed emergency outages in the Odesa and Dnipropetrovsk regions, carried out under Ukrenergo’s guidance.
