China Criticizes UK Over Sanctions on Russia
Mao Ning said that China “consistently opposes unilateral sanctions that lack a basis in international law or authorization from the UN Security Council,” according to state-run Global Times.
Her comments followed the UK’s announcement of nearly 300 new sanctions in what the Foreign Office described as its “biggest” sanctions package to date, targeting Russia’s key revenue sources, including the energy sector and military suppliers. The measures affect 49 entities and individuals, including international suppliers of Russian drones, components, and technology, as well as actors in Russia’s liquefied natural gas sector.
The Global Times noted that the sanctions also targeted certain individuals and enterprises from Iran, China, and the United Arab Emirates.
Mao expressed “strong dissatisfaction with the relevant actions of the British side” and emphasized that China remains “committed to promoting peace talks” regarding the Ukraine crisis. She added, “The normal exchanges and cooperation between China and Russia should not be interfered with or affected. China will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its legitimate and lawful rights and interests.”
Since the conflict began on Feb. 24, 2022, thousands of civilians and combatants have been killed, and millions have been displaced across the Ukraine-Russia border.
